Book Review: Discovering Delight: 31 Meditations on loving God’s Law by Glenda Mathes

Discovering Delight: 31 Meditations on loving God’s Law by Glenda Mathes

For I find my delight in your commandments, which I love.
Psalm 119:47

"The concept of loving law clashes in modern ears like crashing cymbals. Today’s Christians don’t want to read about law. They want to revel in gospel and grace. But the Bible clearly links law with love."
The author, Glenda Mathes, begins the book introducing what the law means and how to delight in it. We like to hear about love and grace, but often we do not realize how important the law is in scripture. The majority of the book centers on Psalm 119 (22 sections), but does include other sections of the Bible. Being the longest chapter of the Bible, Psalm 119 often gets overlooked. As the author goes through Psalm 119 she includes information about it being an acrostic poem and the details one might miss by not studying it more closely. The book was easy to read and understand. There were 31 short chapters, each taking about 2-4 minutes to read, in addition to Bible passages for each chapter. This makes for a nice devotional in addition to other reading. Each chapter ends with reflective questions to help engage the reader.

Quotes from the book:

“True repentance is deep sorrow and conviction of personal sin accompanied by strong commitment and an effort to overcome the sin.”
“Only by trusting in the finished work of Christ, with an awareness of our own sinful tendencies, can we experience true delight in God’s Word and live for Him.”
“If we marvel at God’s law, our core essence delights in keeping it.”

I received this book from the publisher through Cross Focused Reviews in exchange for an honest review.
